By now, you’re probably all too aware that I am on a Slimming World journey. If you’re planning to lose weight then I would suggest giving Slimming World some serious consideration. However, even if your body shape isn’t an issue, taking greater care of your body is key to certain aspects of life improvement. I shall explain…

As I do from time to time, the other day I, again, remembered the sunscreen song by Baz Luhrmann, ‘Everbody’s free (to wear sunscreen)’. On a side note, the wikipedia page for this song provides an interesting read about the origins of the lyrics. The more I listen to this song, the more it resonates. I was 15 when this was released and I didn’t take much notice of it. It is only as time moves on and you experience and conclude things for yourself that it all becomes so real. One of my favourite lines is ‘Enjoy your body… it’s the greatest instrument you will ever own’. This all got me thinking recently about how life has changed and how I feel much better for it, so I thought I would write it down as my own version of advice based on my own meandering experience…

The reality of taking greater care of yourself isn’t as easy as it sounds. However, my experience lends itself to both the results and incentive to make and embed change. Here are six of my best:

Enjoying Life

There’s no escaping the fact that looking good makes you feel good. Feeling good about yourself opens doors to happier experiences and a lesser troubled mind. Whether it’s losing weight, toning up, or giving your body the pampering it deserves, it doesn’t matter. Enhancing your confidence is something that will have you feeling better. The added bonus is that loved ones, and maybe even others, see this and when they let you know they see the changes, it can feel great.

Furthermore, the vast majority of great fashion items are designed with a certain body image in mind. Treating yourself to party dresses and other stunning outfits can be your reward for regaining control of your body. In turn, this will allow you to better enjoy special events. Just this weekend, in fact, it felt wonderful to attend the Isle of Wight Festival, 21lbs lighter. Feeling less wobbly, more toned and generally healthier was wonderful but the best bit? Just enjoying an event without the constant back of the mind niggle over how I look.

Health Improvements

While body image is the primary source of motivation for most people, the health benefits are the greatest reward by far. Healthy eating, a little exercise, and taking necessary precautions can help you to live longer. Moreover, it’s likely to boost your immune system and help fight back against many of the minor aches and pains that can plague your life. This has been a big factor for me as inspiration for shaping up. I spent a lot of time last year feeling unwell and even began this year feeling awfully under the weather. It was time to do something about it and it worked.

Of course, if you have an existing condition or problem, it’s important to speak to a medical expert before making any lifestyle changes. Nonetheless, the human body is very receptive and will let you know if an issue has surfaced. Attending to those issues while aiming to create a better general image can work wonders.

Gaining Balance

When making a conscious effort to take care of your body, you’ll probably start off by being super strict. This could mean sticking to a regimented diet or sticking to a set lifestyle routine. This is something I have done for years. It has taken me a long time, but you realise that establishing a sense of balance is crucial. Without it, you’ll almost certainly fall back into our old ways. This time has been different for me. I have been more relaxed about my little slip-ups and it has made the world of difference. Less pressure has lead to increased commitment and results. Life is funny like that.

If like me, you want to lose weight, Slimming World lets you enjoy treats. Rather than feeling guilty about those naughty delights, you’ll learn to monitor portion sizes and this eventually embeds itself in both your conscious and subconscious mind. Enjoying a little bit of what you love is entirely normal, and gaining that winning mindset is crucial. Interestingly, those sentiments extend to any aspect of looking after the body.

Retaining Youth

Prevention is always easier than treating an issue. As we get older, the signs of ageing will creep in. I spent a long time thinking it would just never happen to me but as Baz says ‘you woo will get old’. As those lines begin to form around your eyes and the texture of skin changes, you realise that you’re not as invincible as you once thought. Slowing the speed of that process is possible and learning to take greater care of your face and body today is the best route to a better tomorrow. Better still, there are many cheap and easy ways to achieve it.

Once again, the fundamentals of a good diet and regular exercise are key. Similarly, healthy sleeping patterns are an ideal way to fight the signs of ageing. however, various beauty creams and household items can become your secret weapons too. It only takes a few minutes of daily care to help minimise the effects of life. Check out my Lidl Skin Care review for a few affordable options.

A Healthy Mind

You’ve heard the saying a million time before, but a healthy body truly does produce a healthy mind. Well, that’s my experience. When you take better care of your body, it’s amazing to notice the changes in your psychological feelings. It’s quite common to feel more ambitious in your career and relationships and those enhancements can actively help you sculpt a brighter future. For me though, much of it has led to a less troubled and more settled mind. Appreciation of the aspects of life which might not be easy but make you feel good, rather than the quick fixes that just prove to be short-term wins.

Feeling in control of your life is powerful. Another insight for me has been how when you feel happier and under control, it can shift the focus from yourself and allow for increased consideration of others. This, in turn, has great benefits such as improving perspectives and both aspects have helped me to feel like a better person. This in itself gives an added boost of confidence. This flow of positivity is very much worth the work.

Setting An Example

The personal benefits gained from keeping your body in better shape and health are enormous. Nevertheless, a lot of people will find that the ability to improve the lives of their loved ones can be equally rewarding. Whether it’s cooking healthier family meals, enjoying bike rides, or quitting cigarettes doesn’t matter. The impacts will spread to your nearest and dearest and it is wonderful to feel that you have inspired others to make positive changes.

In addition to the rewards gained by association, children (and spouses) can learn from your example. The knowledge that they will actively want to take care of their bodies can provide a huge sense of comfort. When added to the aforementioned incentives above, is there a better time than now to change your life for the better? It’s\not always easy of course and life will get in the way at times, however, positive long-term changes can make all the difference and I for one will actively be seeking to keep them.
